Speaker Series: Harvesting History: Black Walnuts and Story of Lincoln with John Coffman

The black walnut tree (Juglans nigra), was a vital resource during Canada's early history. This native tree species was utilized by both Indigenous and early settlers for food, dyes, ink, medicine, and furniture.

Learn how this special tree helped to shape Lincoln’s settlement. After a brief presentation, engage in a hands-on harvest experience where you'll crack and sample walnuts, and, weather permitting, hull some fresh ones outdoors. We will provide all necessary equipment and dried nuts for sampling. Explore the ecological benefits and culinary uses of this remarkable tree while connecting with local history.
