Unmasking Brain Injury: Opening Reception

Join us on Thursday, June 12 from 6–8 p.m. for the opening of Unmasking Brain Injury, a powerful and moving mini exhibit presented in partnership with the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA). This exhibit invites you to discover brain injury through art and personal expression—each mask on display represents a survivor’s lived experience, capturing a deeply personal journey of resilience, recovery, and hope.

The Unmasking Brain Injury project is part of an international movement with a mission to:

-Raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of brain injury
-Give survivors a voice and a platform to educate others about life after brain injury
-Advocate for dignity, respect, and inclusion for those living with an acquired brain injury

Since Ontario became the first Canadian province to participate in the project in 2018, over 2,200 masks have been created by survivors across the province through the coordination of OBIA and its partners. Each mask helps to make the invisible visible, offering a glimpse into the realities of a condition that is too often misunderstood or unseen.

According to OBIA Executive Director Ruth Wilcock, there are nearly half a million Ontarians currently living with acquired brain injury (ABI), with 45,000 new cases each year—not including the 155,000 annual concussions reported in the province.

Come discover brain injury through art and storytelling that honour survivors’ voices and personal journeys. Behind every mask is a story, and behind every story is a person who has been touched by brain injury.

Admission is by donation and all are welcome.

Parts of the exhibit will remain on display throughout the month of June for Brain Injury Awareness Month.
